Myn Mair (O Mary)

Back for an all-too-infrequent visit to Wales and Welsh song. Here is a testament to the resilience and persistence of the Catholic faith amidst the pressures of the Reformation.

**If you know the performer, please leave a comment. I love to give credit where credit is due.**

Myn Mair

Fy hatling offrymaf dros enaid dan glo,
Fy nghanwyll offrymaf yn eglwys y fro,
R offeren weddïaf saith seithwaith yn daer
Er cadw ei enaid anfarwol.
Myn Mair, Myn Mair.

Sant Pawl a Sant Peder, holl seintiau y nef,
A Mair, Mam y Duwdod, eiriolwch yn gref
Dros iddo gael heddwch a gwerthfawr ryddhad,
Paradwys agored, a breichiau ei Dad.
Myn Mair, myn Mair.

Dacw ‘Nghariad

Another brief trip to Wales, something I wish were able to do more here on SOTI, so tell your Welsh singer friends to upload more videos!

I first heard this song from the singing of the American quartet Navan, who perform their own vocal arrangements of traditional songs from Anglo-Celtic cultures. This version by Eve Goodman is gorgeous in its simplicity. The song features a response using the Welsh lilt.

Dacw ‘Nghariad

Dacw ‘nghariad i lawr yn y berllan,
Tw rymdi ro rymdi radl idl al.
O na bawn i yno fy hunan,
Tw rymdi ro rymdi radl idl al.
Dacw’r ty, a dacw’r ‘sgubor;
Dacw ddrws y beudy’n agor.
Ffaldi radl idl al, ffaldi radl idl al,
Tw rymdi ro rymdi radl idl al.

Ar Lan Y Môr (Beside the Sea)

A long-overdue return trip to Wales today for a song from Welsh singer Catrin O’Neill.

Ar Lan y Môr

Ar lan y môr mae rhosys cochion
Ar lan y môr mae lilis gwynion
Ar lan y môr mae ‘nghariad inne
Yn cysgu’r nos a chodi’r bore.

Ar lan y môr mae carreg wastad
Lle bûm yn siarad gair â’m cariad
O amgylch hon fe dyf y lili
Ac ambell gangen o rosmari.

Ar lan y môr mae cerrig gleision
Ar lan y môr mae blodau’r meibion
Ar lan y môr mae pob rinweddau
Ar lan y môr mae nghariad innau.

Llawn yw’r môr o swnd a chegryn
Llawn yw’r wy o wyn a melyn
Llawn yw’r coed o ddail a blode
Llawn o gariad merch wyf inne.

Mor hardd yw’r haul yn codi’r bore
Mor hardd yw’r enfys aml ei liwie
Mor hardd yw natur ym Mehefin
Ond harddach fyth yw wyneb Elin
